I ‘missed’ Joy Division when I grew up.
I was just too young: too young to ‘get’ them. I think New Romantic was the first contemporary era of pop music that I understood and Joy Division were just before them. I became more aware of the shadow they left – especially over the North West when I moved to Oldham in 1987, but apart from ‘Love will tear us apart’ never really listened to them.
I tried to remedy this when it was my 50th birthday and got ‘Unknown Pleasures’. It takes me back to grimy Manchester world that has largely gone now with extensive urban redevelopment.
Out of that album, it is this track that has got to me most of all. Trouble is; as with most of my music, I can only play this when I am alone- my family don’t like it…
