I had a long conversation with my oldest son this week about a novel he had been reading. It was set in the 1970s and made frequent mentions of Malcolm McLaren, The Sex Pistols and Punk. So I tried to give him a potted history of the 70s and why Punk happened.
I also showed him the above video and told him how when I was his age, those who were good at music got to stay in the music room over lunch. It was during those sessions that I first heard ‘Never Mind the Bollocks’. I didn’t really ‘get’ it, but I remember the feeling of rebellion.
It all seems reactively tame now and it is hard to understand the Establishment panic; so I have finally, for 17 pence (plus postage) got a 2nd hand CD of the album. I may not play it in church just yet though….
